Mosaic Expands C-Suite; Appoints Steve Controulis as Chief Financial Officer & Shahzad Kazi as Chief Risk Officer
VP of Home Improvement and VP of People also join solar lender as company aims to originate $1 billion in solar loans by the end of the year
OAKLAND, Calif., Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Mosaic, the leading U.S. provider of affordable solar financing solutions for homeowners, today announced four news hires, including two executive-level appointments. The company has appointed Steve Controulis as Chief Financial Officer, Shahzad Kazi as Chief Risk Officer, Chris Phillips as Vice President of Home Improvement Lending and Heather Houston as Vice President of People. The addition of these roles positions Mosaic to scale as the demand for clean energy solutions from homeowners continues to grow.
Steve Controulis is a seasoned financial executive bringing over 25 years of experience to Mosaic. Prior to joining Mosaic, Controulis spent 11 years as CFO of Triton Container International Limited. He also held roles at GE Capital, Heller Financial and The First National Bank of Chicago. Controulis has led over $10 billion of financing initiatives, including $3 billion in the term asset-backed securitized debt market. He also played a critical leadership role in M&A efforts resulting in the merger of two companies to establish Triton as the world's largest container leasing company with $9 billion in assets. He holds an MBA from the University of Michigan.
"Steve is a pioneer in asset-backed finance and brings valuable experience to Mosaic during an important growth period," said Billy Parish, founder and Chief Executive Officer at Mosaic. "His experience raising capital, structuring transactions and building out a strong financial back-office will be critical as we scale beyond our first $1 billion in solar loan originations."
The new appointments come on the heels of Mosaic's $220 million financing led by Warburg Pincus. "Steve is one of the most talented specialty finance CFOs we've ever worked with," said Arjun Thimmaya, Mosaic Board Member and Managing Director at Warburg Pincus. "We had the pleasure of working with him for the last five years as CFO of our portfolio company, Triton, and look forward to adding his experience and expertise to Mosaic."
Shahzad Kazi joins Mosaic as Chief Risk Officer from SunTrust Bank where he served as a Head of Consumer Credit, overseeing over $100 billion in consumer and small business loans. Prior to SunTrust, he was Executive Vice President and Head of Risk Strategy at HSBC for North America and was responsible for identifying high risk segments and overseeing a $400 billion portfolio that included retail, wholesale, global banking & markets and private banking. With over 30 years of experience in risk management, he's also held senior risk and credit roles at ABN-AMRO and Citibank.
"Shahzad brings risk management experience through credit cycles and across a variety of consumer loan categories," said Parish. "He will help us continue to set the standard for prudent risk management in the home energy financing industry."
Chris Phillips has joined the company as the Vice President of Home Improvement Lending, where he oversees Mosaic's new Home Improvement vertical. Prior to joining Mosaic, Phillips served as VP of Finance and Corporate Development at SoFi. He's also held roles at Conatus Capital Management LP, THL and J.P. Morgan.
Heather Houston brings over 15 years of talent management experience to her role as Vice President of People. Previously she worked at Five9, where she led global HR initiatives and managed HR teams in the U.S., Philippines and Russia. She's also held HR leadership roles at NanoGram Corporation, Bureau Veritas, Zyomyx and EMLab.
"We are thrilled to welcome Steve, Shahzad, Chris and Heather to the Mosaic team," said Parish. "Each new hire brings an impressive background that will help us achieve continued growth and make clean energy accessible for everyone."
