Morningside Recovery Conducts National Survey on Excessive Masturbation
National Poll Reveals Excessive Masturbation Habits and Consequences for Men and Women Across the US
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Feb. 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Morningside Recovery, the leading addiction recovery center in Newport Beach, CA, today announced the results of a national survey which asked men and women across the country about their excessive masturbation patterns. The poll surveyed over 1100 men and women ages 21-35 on Masturbation Addiction and revealed not only their masturbation frequencies and perceptions, but concerns about behavior as well as the effects their masturbation habits have on their interpersonal relationships.
With sex addiction on the rise there are several people in the US dealing with some form of this addiction. As a result, Morningside Recovery conducted this survey in partnership with SurveyMonkey, as they treat several patients suffering from this addiction and were interested in obtaining statistics on the number of Americans who are in fact addicted to this specific sexual act.
The survey entitled, "Excessive Masturbation: Do you have a Hand up on the Average American?," reflects in many ways how men and women between the ages of 21-35 have, in some way, an addiction or slight issue with masturbation and may deal with repercussions in their daily lives because of it. "It is crucial to get an accurate view of how America views and treats excessive Masturbation," said Mary Helen Beatificato, CEO of Morningside Recovery. "This survey helps demonstrate the need to treat those who not only suffer from the shame of excessive masturbation, but to emphasize tolerance, civility and respect from those individuals who they interact with on a daily basis."
Surprisingly, 63 percent of those who participated in this survey were female, and indicated that 20.4 percent of people masturbate at least three or more times per day. Among the other key findings:
- 79.6% masturbate 0-2 times per day; 15.2% 3-5 times a day; 3.8% 6-10 times; and only 1.4% masturbate more than 10 times a day
- 48% believe that their masturbation frequency is below average; 45.4% said frequency is average; and 6% believe that their masturbation frequency is above average
- 45.4% either agreed that masturbating can cause problems in their relationships; while 29.3% neither agreed or disagreed and the rest of the participants disagreed
- 18.3% are either extremely or very ashamed of their masturbating habits; 23.8% are either slightly or somewhat ashamed and the 57.8% are not ashamed at all
"I think the most interesting part of the survey is that 20.4% of respondents masturbate 3 or more times per day. That's a high number of respondents, and that amount of masturbation could cause serious problems in a relationship, especially if it interferes with either person's ability to experience pleasure with a partner," said Dr. Elizabeth Waterman, Psychologist at Morningside Recovery. "This is precisely why we found it important to survey the average American and come to an overall conclusion that excessive Masturbation is overlooked in addiction recovery." As a result, Morningside has compiled these survey results and will be executing a tailored treatment program at their facility for those who suffer from masturbation addiction, which will be led by Dr. Waterman.
