The Challenge
From April 13 to July 7, volunteers from five of the nation's top food banks will compete to see which region can generate the most volunteer hours.
Participants will enter their hours of volunteer service to food banks in the Reward Volunteers app.
The Challengers
The five food banks participating in the challenge include:
Capital Area Food Bank
City Harvest
Community Food Bank of New Jersey
Los Angeles Regional Food Bank
Philabundance
The Rewards
In addition to the prizes available for the Reward Volunteers program -- which include cash, trips and goods -- the five food banks will be eligible to win an additional $3,000 for their organizations. Whichever charity logs the most hours by July 7, 2012, wins $3,000. To ensure a level playing field, the winning food bank will be determined by the ratio of the number of hours logged divided by the number of participating volunteers.
The App
Cabot -- best known as makers of "The World's Best Cheddar" -- launched Reward Volunteers in February to encourage volunteers to log hours, post to Facebook, and earn rewards for themselves and the organizations they serve. The app is free and can be downloaded from iTunes, or used as a web-based program.
The Food Bank Challenge coincides with Cabot's Community Tour that will honor local people who give their time and skills to strengthen their communities. The winner of the Food Bank Challenge will be announced on July 7, 2012 in Portland, ME as part of a global finale to celebrate the U.N.'s International Year of the Cooperative.
