MIQUON, Pa., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Girl Scouts across the region kicked off their Program Year yesterday with Nuts About Reading to help girls and troops get a jump start on fundraising to support their annual activities. Girls will sell a variety of nuts, candy, and magazine subscriptions through October 25.

Product Programs are Skills-Builders
Nuts About Reading is one of two product programs Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) hosts each year. Like the better-known Girl Scout Cookie Program, Nuts About Reading teaches girls goal-setting, marketing, planning, decision-making, and interpersonal skills. One enterprising Girl Scout approached doctor- and dentist-office waiting areas to boost her magazine-sales proceeds. Approximately 80 percent of U.S. women leaders and executives and 70 percent of U.S. Congresswomen were Girl Scouts; many say they got their start in either or both of the Product Programs.
Some troops and volunteer groups are using the theme "Design Your Future, Construct a Plan" as the foundation for festive Program Pep Rallies. Organizers don hard-hats, work boots and tool belts, and help participants "overcome obstacles" with a construction maze complete with push-brooms, orange cones, a ladder to success, and yellow caution tape. Other activity stations include a "Tools for Success" display and a hysterical game of "Pin the Tail on the Monkey" (which is this year's Nuts About Reading mascot).
Using Troop Proceeds to Help Others
Proceeds from any council's Product Program remain in and directly support its service area. Girls and troops typically accrue and apply a portion of their sales proceeds to support program-year activities, but at least one troop in Palmerton (Carbon County) is funneling all of its 2010 Nuts About Reading proceeds into a Campership Fund, which provides financial support to girls who can't afford camp and other Girl Scout programs.
