More Than Four-in-Ten U.S. Adults Have Re-gifted an Item, Finds New CouponCabin.com Survey
--From Nose Hair Clippers to Plungers, U.S. Adults Share the Most Awkward Gifts They've Given or Received--
WHITING, Ind., Nov. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Like the infamous "Seinfeld" episode when a label maker is re-gifted to Jerry, re-gifting is a trend that's not going away. More than four-in-ten (41 percent) U.S. adults report they have re-gifted an item, meaning they have received a gift from someone and given it to a different person as a gift. On the receiving end, more than one-third (35 percent) said they've received what they believed to be a re-gifted item. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from November 3rd-7th, 2011 among 2,574 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.
When it comes to income levels, those who make more said they are more likely to re-gift. Nearly half (49 percent) of U.S. adults with a total household income of more than $75,000 said they're guilty of re-gifting, while 33 percent of those with a household income of less than $35,000 said the same.
No matter what people make or who they're getting presents for, re-gifting and awkward gift moments are bound to happen this season. When asked what was the most awkward gift they have ever given or received, U.S. adults said the following:
- Gift card with the name of the person who just gave it to me in the "to" section.
- Bowling ball from my in-laws. I hate bowling.
- Bracelet with someone else's name on it.
- Nose hair clipper.
- Condoms and a cheesesteak.
- Plunger.
- 5 quarts of oil and a filter for my car.
- Workout videos.
- An answering machine for a landline phone. I don't have a landline phone.
- Woman's sweater. I'm a man.
- The whole Beverly Hillbillies series on VHS tapes.
- Set of jumper cables.
Sometimes, re-gifting may be the consequence of growing "to buy for" lists. Forty-five percent of U.S. adults said they plan to buy gifts for people outside of their extended family and friends this year. When asked whom they planned to buy for this holiday season, U.S. adults said the following:
- Co-workers, supervisors, managers at my workplace – 18 percent
- People who provide services to me, such as a dog walker, mail delivery person, handyman, salon stylist, doorman – 14 percent
- Friends from my church, synagogue, religious center – 12 percent
- Neighbors – 11 percent
- Their children's teachers – 7 percent
"Long holiday gift lists are likely to stretch any holiday budget," said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. "Many people are figuring out how best to celebrate those in their lives, while also keeping an eye on their bank accounts. This may mean purchasing smaller items, making homemade gifts or doing a 'Secret Santa' exchange to cut down on costs."
When determining the amount to spend on a gift for those outside of their extended family and friends, 39 percent of U.S. adults said that it depends solely on what they can afford after buying gifts for closer friends and family. Twenty-six percent said it depends on how close they feel to a person, while 6 percent base it on what they anticipate the other party will give to them, so the exchange will be of equal value.
