More Than 900 CPAs Set to Volunteer in Communities Across Illinois on Friday, September 24
By the numbers Illinois CPA Society's First CPA Day of Service already a success
CHICAGO, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Friday, September 24, more than 900 CPAs throughout the state of Illinois are taking part in the Illinois CPAs Society's first CPA Day of Service.
The Illinois CPA Society organized a CPA Day of Service with the growing needs of social service agencies and organizations and the economy in mind. The Society was also responding to increased member interest in public service opportunities, but didn't anticipate the tremendous turnout that well exceeded initial expectations of a few hundred participants.
"In tough times it's great to see the spirit of giving back to the community still thrives," said Elaine Weiss, Illinois CPA Society President and CEO. "So many people now face so many individual challenges, and yet the CPA profession shows such enthusiasm for helping others. It goes way beyond bean counting but adds up to making a real difference."
Illinois CPAs do seem to be out to prove they can do more than crunch numbers. While they'll be using their financial expertise to help with fundraisers, set-up accounting procedures and counsel students about money, Society members are also going to be busy with a variety tasks not usually associated with the profession.
In the far northern suburbs of Chicago a group of employees from CJBS, LLC in Northbrook will be helping Equestrian Connection, which provides therapeutic programs for individuals with special needs, prep barns for an annual fundraiser. Accounting students from Illinois State's chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, the international honors organization for financial information students and professionals, are participating in an effort to beautify downtown Normal. Staff members from BDO in Chicago will be helping the Veterans of Foreign Wars set-up a welcome home event for veterans in Villa Park.
More than 40 firms are involved in this effort providing volunteers to over 130 different organizations. Projects are being done in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club, Habitat for Humanity, Feed My Starving Children, Greater Chicago Food Depository, the American Heart Association and others, including local park districts, food pantries and homeless shelters.
Volunteer CPAs wearing black CPA Day of Service t-shirts will be visible in communities from every corner of the state – from Chicago to Carbondale and from Danville to Edwardsville - as they give back to their communities.
