More than 400 Organizations to Register Thousands of Voters on September 24, National Voter Registration Day 2013
Coordinated field, technology and media efforts will create pervasive awareness of voter registration just in time for the 2013 off-year elections.
WASHINGTON, Aug. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On September 24, 2013, millions of Americans will again celebrate National Voter Registration Day, the largest one-day effort to register voters and get them involved in the American political system. Indicative of last year's success when more than 300,000 voters were registered, National Voter Registration Day 2013 is once again recognized and supported by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) and more than 400 organizations nationwide.
The theme for National Voter Registration 2013—Millions of people will vote this year. Will you?—will remind the American electorate that an estimated 1,500 statewide and local political races and ballot initiatives will be decided on Election Day, November 5th.
Identified as a national day of civic action, National Voter Registration Day will bring together a coalition of volunteers, celebrities, and organizations to engage potential voters on the ground through coordinated events nationwide.
Using #CelebrateNVRD, @CelebrateNVRD on Twitter and fb.com/CelebrateNVRD on Facebook, National Voter Registration Day partner organizations will also coordinate social media outreach to permeate Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+ and others. The coalition's efforts on social media websites will create awareness and encourage Americans to register using the coalition's easy-to-use online voter registration tool at www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org.
"Elections are held every year and millions of Americans will head to the polls this November to cast their vote for their next mayor, governor, councilperson, school board member, or to approve or reject referendums," said Rosario Dawson, actor, activist, and a National Voter Registration Day coalition member. "This year, we will work hard as a coalition, encouraging every American to register and to exercise their most basic right as Americans—their right to vote."
What Will Happen:
- A network of national and local organizations and their volunteers will engage and register eligible voters at transportation hubs, retail locations, concerts, and other events and venues. For a listing of events, visit www.NationalVoterRegistrationDay.org.
- A coordinated national online effort will encourage millions to easily register through the coalition's online voter registration tool at http://www.nationalvoterregistrationday.org/register-to-vote.
More than 300,000 voters were registered during the first-ever National Voter Registration Day in 2012 and millions more were engaged online and reminded to vote. National Voter Registration Day trended on Twitter with #925NVRD and #NVRD, and the effort received recognition by national, state and local candidates running for public office.
