More Hungry Families Than Ever - Salvation Army Receives Dominion Gift to Ease the Burden
CARNEGIE, Pa., March 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In 2009, The Salvation Army in Allegheny County provided nearly 80,000 more meals to hungry families than in 2008. As the need for providing food, clothing and shelter rises, funding pools are diminishing. But, thanks to the generosity of the Dominion Foundation, that pool just got a little deeper.
"Our Director of Social Services received an unexpected phone call from the Dominion Foundation offering their help," explained Major Sandra Jackson, The Salvation Army's Allegheny County Coordinator. "It is a rare occasion that a nonprofit gets an unsolicited offer of support. Dominion's $5,000 gift is a blessing that will go a long way to help feed hundreds of hungry families here in Allegheny County."
Dominion seeks to help its neighbors who are encountering hardships during the current economic downturn. Grant focus areas included preservation of natural and historic resources, workforce development and education, diversity initiatives, neighborhood and community development, and meeting basic needs for food, shelter and clothing. Funding for the grants come from the Dominion Foundation, which is the philanthropic arm of Dominion dedicated to the economic, physical and social health of the communities served by Dominion companies.
