More Colorado Students Learning Online
Provost Academy, State's New Online High School Enrolling Students for the Upcoming Year
DENVER, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the Colorado Department of Education, the number of families in the state selecting online education for their children continues to grow. More than 11,500 students were enrolled in a fully online school last year – an increase of 12.5% over the previous year – with the number expected to be higher next year.
Provost Academy Colorado, the state's new online public high school, is seeing enrollment for the 2010-11 school year increase daily, and the school's Executive Director, Audie Rubin is not surprised.
"Students today want to be active participants in their education," Rubin said. "They want to learn the same way they live, utilizing what they are familiar with such as blogs, podcasts, and instant messaging to create an interactive environment in which they can thrive."
According to Rubin, who formerly was the director of Jefferson County's online education program, students and their parents are coming to realize the benefits of online education. "I have seen the strides students make in their academic success when they are truly engaged in the online experience, and their education matches their individual learning style."
Rubin also points out that many students benefit from the flexible schedule that online school offers. "They can be an elite athlete or musician who needs to travel for competitions, a student who is helping to support their family with a job, or a teen mom who needs care for her child but doesn't want to sacrifice an education. Online school gives these students the chance to earn a real high school diploma."
