MontaVista® Delivers Open Source Platform Ideal for 5G Carrier Grade Telecom Infrastructure, NFV Applications and Embedded Internet of Things (IoT) Devices
MontaVista's Linux Carrier Grade eXpress (CGX) adds rapid development, advanced security, connectivity, virtualization, and Carrier Grade reliability capabilities
SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ESC Embedded System Conference -- MontaVista® Software, LLC, a leader in Embedded Linux® commercialization services, today announced MontaVista Carrier Grade eXpress (CGX), the next generation platform for embedded Internet of Things (IoT) devices, 5G carrier grade telecom infrastructure, and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) solutions.
MontaVista® Linux® CGX, delivers carrier grade Linux reliability, security, and serviceability that is highly configurable and flexible. CGX meets the demands of the interconnected intelligent devices, providing application portability, dynamic configuration, field maintenance, and real-time performance in a single platform.
As a fully integrated, pre-tested environment, MontaVista CGX offers a robust out of box experience for development teams. Developers can now choose CGX to achieve rapid time to market while leveraging the flexibility of a true open source development platform. CGX will incorporate emerging standards at a yearly cadence, aligning with the latest Yocto® revisions. "The Open Source Community continues to innovate at a much more rapid pace. CGX is designed to give our customers the high quality Linux distribution they have come to trust with MontaVista while enabling them with new cutting edge features and standards to meet the demands of emerging 5G, IoT, and NFV markets," states Sanjay Raina, MontaVista President.
MontaVista CGX is packaged as a base platform (CGX Foundation) equipped with a core feature set needed to produce a high quality embedded product. For market specific requirements, MontaVista will offer additional technology profiles such as Carrier Grade and Virtualization, adding in key features and functionality critical for solutions in these vertical markets.
Application developers will benefit from the QEMU simulator, accelerating schedules by beginning development before real silicon platforms are available. Additionally, CGX will offer flexibility to choose multiple upgrade options, including Kernel live patching. This technique is particularly useful for applying small patches or security fixes on the Kernel without taking a product offline. It also greatly simplifies maintainability in conjunction with RPM based user-land upgrade, essential for IoT devices. In addition, MontaVista is introducing Docker® in CGX which allows user applications (Docker containers) to be updated one at a time in a layered fashion. An integrated hardware root of trust and package authentication ensures complete security through the upgrade process even in a very large scale deployment.
MontaVista's CGX delivers best in class open source Linux technology that is pre-integrated and validated for Rapid Development. It is complemented with services delivered by MontaVista's world-class Engineering Services group to assist customers in building custom solutions.
By accelerating the product time to market and increasing the new platform enablement flexibility, while still maintaining very long term support options, MontaVista is targeting the best of both worlds for the next generation 5G Carriers, Telecom Equipment, and IoT markets. MontaVista is currently working with strategic customers with an early access program and CGX will be generally available in 4Q2015.
