MontaVista Announces Real-Time Telco Cloud Infrastructure (RTCI) Solution for Carrier Grade Software Defined Networks
RTCI enables telco equipment to use standard server form factors
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- MontaVista® Software, LLC, a leader in Embedded Linux® commercialization services, today announces the new Real-time Telco Cloud Infrastructure (RTCI) solution that enables telco grade equipment to use standard server form factors. RTCI will be used by telecom equipment manufacturers (TEMs) building controllers and gateways for mobile and fixed access network operators.
In an effort to keep up with the explosion of heterogeneous network traffic, network operators are looking to software defined networks architecture to enable greater utilization of standard hardware and dynamic provisioning of bandwidth. To meet the demands of network operators Telecom Equipment Manufacturers (TEMs) want to use cost-effective hardware and software solutions from IT vendors. TEMs want to use IT vendors' rich ecosystem of COTS hardware, open middleware and provisioning/management systems. However TEMs currently cannot leverage the existing IT ecosystem because telecom applications require deterministic response times from the underlying software infrastructure that was not commercially available till now.
MontaVista's RTCI enables TEMs to leverage the existing IT ecosystem by providing a popular Linux distribution compatible API enhanced with real-time KVM. RTCI dramatically improves performance of Linux hypervisor capability for virtualized environments while embracing the IT ecosystem of hardware, middle-ware, and bandwidth provisioning solutions. To this end, RTCI is enabled on most COTS hardware and market-leading middleware so TEMs can go to market faster with lower software costs.
"MontaVista created the carrier grade Linux market 12 years ago for embedded systems. We are excited to leverage our rich expertise to enable the next generation of telecom equipment. RTCI combines the best of both worlds from IT and embedded. TEMs can take advantage of leading IT provisioning and cloud management software combined with MontaVista's high performance and custom tuning of an open source hypervisor," says Patrick MacCartee, Director Product Management for MontaVista. "TEMs can now deliver a higher quality of service with lower total cost of ownership for operators."
TEMs wishing to deploy SDN architectures on an open platform specifically tuned to meet their use cases with full commercial quality now have a solution. MontaVista's engineering services will enhance timers, schedulers, QEMU, KVM to meet key performance metric all while backing it with support for up to 10 years. MontaVista is currently working with lead customers on this solution and will have sample applications available for evaluation in Q2 2013.
