Monsanto Outlines New Weed Management Platform Under the Roundup Ready PLUS™ Brand
Roundup Ready PLUS Platform Designed to Provide Farmers Effective Weed Control and Reduced On-Farm Costs
ST. LOUIS, Oct. 19, 2010 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Monsanto Company (NYSE: MON) today outlined its new platform on weed management to provide the framework needed to manage weeds in the absence or presence of glyphosate-resistance. The Roundup Ready PLUS™ platform allows farmers to increase the benefits of their Roundup Ready crops by using the best practice recommendations and receiving financial incentives for following the program. The platform is designed to provide effective and sustainable weed control benefits for farmers. The announcement was made this morning at the opening of the Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Ga., where the Company's team is visiting with Southeastern farmers.
"We have talked with farmers, weed scientists and others in the industry to develop a set of best management recommendations to control glyphosate-resistant weeds where they exist and reduce the risk of developing these weeds on other fields where farmers are growing Roundup Ready crops. The Roundup Ready PLUS platform was designed to improve on-farm productivity, sustain the benefits of conservation tillage and provide effective weed management," said Mike Frank, vice president of Monsanto's crop protection business. "We have assembled a set of recommendations, products and incentives packaged together to bring solutions to the farm."
The Roundup Ready PLUS platform provides weed management recommendations for Roundup Ready crops for each farm situation, by pairing crop protection products from Monsanto and other companies.
The Roundup Ready PLUS recommendations place emphasis on residual control designed to manage tough weeds, including resistant pigweed and tall waterhemp. Cotton farmers in the Southeast and Mid-South United States who follow the Roundup Ready PLUS recommendation are eligible for a rebate of $20 per acre as part of the Cotton Performance Plus Program. This recommendation also includes elements to help control escapes should weather or other factors complicate control. Soybean farmers using the Roundup Ready PLUS recommendation for soybeans are eligible for Residual Rewards, a program that provides a rebate of up to $3 per acre to include qualifying residual herbicides in their weed management plans.
