Monitronics Signs Code of Ethics, Fights Door-Knocking Scams
Electronic Security Association unveils zero tolerance policy
LAS VEGAS, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Home security alarm provider Monitronics is protecting consumers against security system scams. Vice President of Marketing Mitch Clarke Wednesday signed the door-knocking code of ethics and standards of conduct for Electronic Security Association (ESA) members. This code aims to fight the problem of dishonest door-to-door alarm sales people.
"These rogue people hurt everyone in the industry and we believe this code of ethics will really impact behaviors this year," said Mitch Clarke, Vice President of Marketing. "This is a voluntary set of guidelines for those of us in the alarm protection industry and I believe it will make a big difference."
Door-knocking scams negatively affect everyone in the industry: the Better Business Bureau received 3,000 complaints about alarm companies in 2009, an increase from 2,100 the year before. Monitronics has been on the front line of fighting these practices: Monitronics and ADT teamed up in 2009 to challenge corrupt business practices and filed six separate lawsuits against salespeople themselves. Monitronics was instrumental in developing this code of ethics.
Seven other representatives from ESA member companies also signed the code at the 2010 ISC West conference in Las Vegas: Shawn Brenchly, APX Alarm; Dom D'Ascoli, Smoky Mountain Systems and next ESA president; Dan Garrido, Broadview Security; Jay Haun, ADT; Jennifer Holloway, Protection One; Mike Miller, Moon Security and ESA president; and Steve Zolman, Pinnacle Security.
For more than 60 years, the Electronic Security Association (formerly the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association) has supported the changing needs of its members, the industry and the nation. A non-profit 501(c) 6 trade association, the ESA has evolved into the largest professional trade association in the United States with the purpose of representing, promoting and enhancing the growth and professional development of the electronic life safety, security, and integrated systems industry.
Founded in 1994, Monitronics International is one of the nation's largest, fastest-growing alarm monitoring companies. Headquartered in Dallas, they provide monitored security system services to more than 750,000 residential customers and commercial clients through their network of nationwide, independent authorized dealers.
