NEW YORK, June 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- MongoDB World -- MongoDB, the database for giant ideas, today announced MongoDB Atlas, an elastic, on-demand cloud service that includes comprehensive infrastructure and turnkey management of its popular database. MongoDB Atlas will be available to users all over the world, on all popular cloud platforms. The service will initially be available on Amazon Web Services, followed by Microsoft Azure and then Google Cloud Platform. MongoDB has always made it easy to build applications, and now MongoDB Atlas makes it just as easy to run them – at scale, always on. To get access to MongoDB Atlas, visit mongodb.com/atlas.
Because MongoDB Atlas is operated by the experts who design and engineer the database, developers no longer need to worry about operational tasks such as provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, backups, and failure recovery. In addition, the service offers elastic scalability, either by scaling up on a range of instance sizes or scaling out with automatic sharding, all with no application downtime.
"MongoDB Altas takes everything we know about operating MongoDB and packages it into a convenient, secure, elastic, on-demand service," said Dev Ittycheria, president and CEO of MongoDB. "This new offering is yet another major milestone for the most feature rich and popular database for modern applications, and expands the options for how customers can consume the technology – in their own data centers, in the cloud, and now as a service."
"The day we founded MongoDB, we envisioned a world where developers could focus on what's most important, turning their giant ideas into innovative applications – MongoDB Atlas embodies just that," said Eliot Horowitz, CTO and co-founder of MongoDB. "By running on MongoDB Atlas, developers can trust that their applications will be highly available, secure, scale seamlessly, and without the downtime that comes from applying patch updates. MongoDB Atlas is the culmination of over five years of building software to run MongoDB in the cloud."
Designed for High Availability
MongoDB Atlas delivers high availability with an architecture that is fault-tolerant and self-healing. Recovery from instance failures is transparent and fully automated. MongoDB Atlas automatically and continuously monitors and backs up customer databases, providing always-on availability and granular point-in-time recovery at the click of a button. A minimum of three copies of user data is replicated across availability zones and continuously backed up.
Designed for Choice
A recent survey of more than 2,000 members of the MongoDB community found that 30 percent of respondents deploy on more than one public cloud. MongoDB Atlas enables multi-vendor cloud strategies by providing the same great features and benefits across several public cloud vendors, including MongoDB strategic partners like Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
"Azure support for MongoDB Atlas reinforces Microsoft's commitment to providing enterprise customers with even more choice and a complete platform that can manage both structured and unstructured data with security, consistency and credibility," said Mitra Azizirad, General Manager of Cloud Application Development and Data at Microsoft. "This partnership further underscores that Microsoft offers the most complete cloud platform on the market."
High Performance for Demanding Workloads
The service delivers high throughput and low latency for read and write operations to the most demanding workloads at virtually any scale. This consistent, predictable performance eliminates the need for separate caching tiers, and can deliver 80 percent cost reduction compared to traditional enterprise database software.
Fully Secure
MongoDB Atlas provides multiple levels of security, all built in, and all enabled by default. These include robust access control, network isolation using Amazon VPC, IP whitelists and end-to-end encryption of all data.
Elastic Pricing Model
MongoDB Atlas offers an elastic pricing model that is metered on hourly usage. A wide range of instance sizes, storage performance, and backup schedules are available to meet the specific demands of every deployment.
Availability
Access to MongoDB Atlas is available now at mongodb.com/atlas. The service is currently available on Amazon Web Services. Integration with Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform will be available in the future.
"MongoDB Atlas hits the sweet spot between do-it-yourself and hands off when it comes to managed database infrastructure," said Aaron King, VP of Product Engineering at Social News Desk. "MongoDB Atlas makes it easy to spin up a complex, high-availability database cluster in just a few minutes. The performance monitoring and metrics are far better than anywhere else and the price point is lower than other providers. But most importantly, who better to trust with your database than the company who builds it."
