Money Management International Provides Resources and Counseling in Wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma
Houston-based nonprofit supports the financial recovery of households in all affected communities
SUGAR LAND, Texas, Sept. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Money Management International (MMI) headquarters and staff, directly impacted by Hurricane Harvey, are responding to support their neighbors and other communities affected by recent storms in the Gulf States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
MMI has developed resources to address the needs of hurricane victims. Information on disaster assistance, post-disaster essentials, and links to hurricane recovery support services can be found at MoneyManagement.org. Tips on avoiding storm-related scams can be found at ConsumerFinance.gov. Credit counselors at MMI are also available 24/7 to provide advice, referrals, and financial counseling to those struggling to rebuild their lives.
"We are proud of our 60-year legacy of helping consumers through their most challenging moments," said Ivan Hand, President and CEO of MMI. "As communities recover from hurricane devastation, storm victims can rely on MMI as a trusted resource to help them get back on track financially."
Headquartered just outside Houston, MMI's branch footprint includes offices in other affected southern states. MMI is the largest nonprofit credit counseling agency in the United States, serving over 300,000 clients in 2016. Employees from across MMI's national network have stepped forward to help hurricane victims. MMI counselors are accredited by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), who has also developed a Financial Post-Disaster Checklist.
Nonprofit credit counseling has been shown to reduce financial stress and improve financial health. After ensuring physical safety and filing insurance claims, MMI recommends that hurricane victims review their entire financial situation. Reduced income and unplanned out-of-pocket costs, including insurance deductibles and replacement of uninsured items, can deplete emergency savings and increase unsecured debt. The accredited professionals at MMI are prepared to help victims transition from crisis to control.
