Money Management International joins other nonprofits supporting furlough recovery
Hundreds of affected employees contacted MMI during the government shutdown
SUGAR LAND, Texas, Jan. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Money Management International (MMI), the largest nonprofit provider of financial counseling in the United States, is providing free budget advice and debt management guidance to recovering government employees and contractors. MMI is also waiving set-up fees for those in need of long-term debt management assistance post-shutdown, and referring clients to other available resources throughout the country. MMI has a 60-year history of helping America overcome financial challenges, including those resulting from recessions, disasters, and closures.
"The shutdown has caused a clear disruption to the lives of government employees and contractors," said Jim Triggs, Senior Vice-President of Operations at MMI. "Workers not only had to choose which bills to pay, often using credit cards to fill the gap, but have experienced significant stress as a result of their income being temporarily frozen and the possibility of a shutdown relapse."
Since the shutdown began, MMI has responded to hundreds of affected consumers and expects the number to grow as recovery begins. In addition to providing direct one-on-one counseling 24/7 by phone and online, MMI is supporting its partners' efforts by offering outreach campaigns to their customers, employees, and members. MMI educators have presented to impacted audiences and published a guide on managing money during a work stoppage.
The United Way and 2-1-1 helpline are also assisting recovering federal workers by keeping a running tally of all publicly available programs and providing information about local social services, including the availability of public benefits and corporate assistance programs offering relief for monthly living expenses.
Individuals experiencing financial stress can contact MMI any time of day or night at 866.864.8995 or MoneyManagement.org to be connected to a certified counselor for free budget advice and a personalized action plan.
