MOM's Organic Market Switches to LED Lighting
ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MOM's Organic Market, Maryland's foremost locally based organic grocery chain, just completed the switch from using traditional incandescent lights to LED bulbs in all of its stores.
The company began retrofitting its older stores with Feit Electric's LED floodlights in July 2011 and completed the transformation this week. MOM's decision to install LEDs in its stores aligns with the company's mission to Protect and Restore the Environment. LEDs are more energy efficient than any other lighting technology available today including halogen, CFL, and incandescent bulbs.
The LEDs chosen by MOM's last an average of 25,000 hours and use 18 watts per bulb. The old incandescent bulbs lasted about 3,000 hours and used an average of over 60 watts per bulb. The new LED bulbs will use 16,794 watts of energy annually. Prior to the LED installation, MOM's required over 61,000 watts of energy to power the incandescent bulbs.
Saving 231,642 kWh per year is equivalent to MOM's removing the annual greenhouse emissions of 31 cars or the annual CO2 emissions of 20 homes.
According to the company's founder, Scott Nash, "Installing LED lights in all of our stores cost us $40,000.00. With an annual energy cost savings of $21,000, our investment will pay for itself in 1.8 years. Every fiscally responsible corporation in the world should be looking for such ways to save energy, thereby saving money. Installing LEDs is a 'no brainer'."
The commitment to switching to LED bulbs is one more way MOM's has shown its commitment to its Purpose of protecting and restoring the environment.
