Mohonk Preserve Hosts Rock The Ridge 50-mile Endurance Challenge
GARDINER, N.Y., Nov. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lace up your running, walking, or hiking shoes and get ready to Rock The Ridge on Apr. 30, 2016 at Mohonk Preserve. Combining a unique physical challenge with a commitment to conservation, Rock The Ridge is a 50-mile endurance challenge with a 24-hour time limit. After three successful years, preparations are underway to Rock The Ridge again in April.
Inspired by President John F. Kennedy's challenge to the U.S. Marines to complete a 50-mile march in 24 hours, Rock The Ridge revives this American spirit of fitness. Covering 50 miles is a major achievement, but the 24-hour time limit allows for people with a wide range of abilities to participate by running, jogging, hiking, or walking, and the individual and team format makes for a unique experience.
Ridge Rockers may participate in one of three divisions: Individual 50-Mile, Team 50-Mile, and Team Relay. In addition to competing in the challenge, participants will also fundraise for Mohonk Preserve to support critical conservation efforts including restoring the historic carriage roads that make up the event's course.
In 2015, Rock The Ridge hosted over 320 participants, ranging from elite athletes to many first-time 50-milers, including several teams that walked the entire distance. All of the participants finished in less than 20 hours, meeting the Kennedy Challenge and demonstrating that Rock The Ridge is as much an event for hikers and walkers as it is for runners.
Between now and race day, participants can take advantage of critical support and training from the Rock The Ridge team, including conference calls with the official trainer, guided training run/hikes, and fundraising support from the Preserve's Development staff.
This year, Mohonk Preserve is proud to be teaming again with Team Red, White & Blue, a national veteran's organization, and the Michael J. Fox Foundation's Team Fox, fundraising for Parkinson's research.
Located just 90 miles from New York City, Mohonk Preserve is New York's largest nonprofit nature preserve, featuring 8,000 acres of cliffs, forests, fields, and farmlands in a National Historic Landmark Landscape.
Whether you walk, run, or do a mixture of both, Rock The Ridge is a spectacular outdoor adventure and an opportunity to support environmental conservation. Register by Nov. 30 for a $50 savings and join your fellow Ridge Rockers on Apr. 30, 2016.
