Mobis Transportation to Open Bikestation Hillsboro Bike Transit Center, Representing Next Step in Alternative Transportation
HILLSBORO, Ore. and LONG BEACH, Calif., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobis Transportation, the leading developer of sustainable bicycle and other alternative transportation infrastructure systems, today announced Bikestation Hillsboro bike transit center, representing the growth of sustainable multi-modal alternative transportation solutions in cities across the country. Located in the recently completed Hillsboro, Ore. Intermodal Transit Facility one block from Tri-Met's Blue MAX transit line, Bikestation Hillsboro encourages a modal shift from car commuting to cleaner, sustainable transportation options, such as bicycles that link with public transportation systems. Bikestation Hillsboro will provide members with a range of amenities, including electronically secure indoor bicycle parking, showers, restrooms, lockers, a bicycle self-repair stand with tools and transit information. The Blue MAX transit line connects Portland with surrounding communities and Bikestation Hillsboro will serve those commuting into Portland as well as those going to local businesses in the adjacent Health and Education District, including Tuality Healthcare, Pacific University, Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center and Portland Community College. Bikestation Hillsboro anticipates reducing over 50,000 vehicle miles traveled and mitigating the production of approximately 50,000 pounds of carbon emissions and other pollutants by the end of the first two years. Bikestation Hillsboro is scheduled to open for operation in late September 2010.
"The recent growth of the Bikestation bike transit facility network across the country has been phenomenal and we're thrilled that Bikestation Hillsboro is the latest to open. This facility will address current cyclists' needs, and importantly, the very significant number of 'interested but concerned' who would like to shift to cycling and simply require better infrastructure and programs to do it. With dozens of other bike transit center projects in progress in the U.S., Mobis Transportation/Bikestation is leading the way in developing this multi-modal infrastructure," said Andrea White-Kjoss, president and chief executive officer, Mobis Transportation/Bikestation.
Bikestation Hillsboro will encourage broader usage of public transportation by addressing the issue of the first and last mile – the distance between a public transit stop and the commuter's destination. Often this distance can be too far to comfortably walk, creating an obstacle to greater use of public transit. By offering cyclists a wide range of services and amenities that make bike commuting easy, secure and convenient, Bikestation encourages broader usage of alternative transportation options, such as public transit.
"Bikestation Hillsboro offers our community and our visitors greater transportation options and serves as a testament to our dedication to alternative transportation, overall sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions," said Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey. "We're excited about what Bikestation Hillsboro brings to further develop our bicycle transit infrastructure and to continue our focus on building walkable, bikeable communities."
Located at 265 SE 8th Avenue, Bikestation Hillsboro is over 1,200 square feet with 35 electronically secure indoor bicycle parking spaces. Memberships are currently available for $96 per year, $12 per month, or $1 per day (sold in packs of 10), plus a $20 annual administrative fee. Early bird membership applications will be accepted through the month of September; the form can be found online at www.bikestation.com. Membership includes access to Bikestation Hillsboro and its services and amenities as well as to all other Bikestation bike transit centers located across the country including: Long Beach, Santa Barbara, Claremont, Covina, and Palo Alto, Calif.; and Washington, D.C.
