MobileMakersEdu, an Apple Professional Learning Provider, Inspired by National Mentoring Month
BARRINGTON, Ill., Jan. 25, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- January is designated as National Mentoring Month and MobileMakersEdu, a high school app development curriculum created by not- for-profit Uncharted Learning, has been inspired to take mentoring a step further by connecting educators with technology professionals. These mobile app developers provide high school teachers with on-the-job coaching and mentoring that is just a click away.
The MobileMakersEdu program delivers an authentic workplace experience to high school students who are challenged to develop at least 8 iOS apps that grow in complexity throughout the year. High school teachers undergo an official bootcamp that provides training in Swift, the language used for iOS mobile apps. Due to the comprehensive program, MobileMakersEdu earned the designation of an Apple Professional Learning Provider.
David Fitzer, Interactive Media/Mobile Applications Instructor from South-Western Career Academy in Grove City, Ohio found the training beneficial, but was very impressed with the ongoing support from professional app developers throughout the school year.
"Through the MobileMakersEdu teacher training programs, I was given the professional development to learn how to teach coding and was provided with the ongoing support and tools to be successful. The MobileMakersEdu bootcamp was the best professional development I've attended in my 24 years as a career technical educator," said Fitzer. "This support continues via the MobileMakersEdu Slack channel which I access frequently and the questions I've asked have always been answered quickly."
The MobileMakersEdu Slack Channel provides a forum for collaboration and support while providing one-on-one mentoring for teachers on instruction, assessments and programming principles from technology professionals.
Laura Anderson, high school teacher from Canton High School in Canton, Illinois, also finds the mentoring program beneficial. "Access to professional app developers provides an opportunity for me to ask all of my questions and they guarantee a 24-hour response time, but usually, I will receive an answer within the hour."
Congratulations to MobileMakersEdu and the Uncharted Learning Team who recognize the importance of establishing connections between teachers and industry experts.
