Mobile Experts Highlights the Future of Cloud RAN for In-Building Wireless
New Analysis illustrates the impact of centralization and virtualization for in-building networks
CAMPBELL, Calif., Oct. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Mobile Experts released a report that filters the foggy terminology used by vendors to describe Cloud RAN solutions, and provides clear technical insights into DAS/Small Cell convergence. The report describes how the convergence will compete with DRS solutions and trends as networks localize and centralize various layers of baseband processing.
The Mobile Experts analysis also provides capacity comparisons for each key in-building solution, and business model issues are highlighted to illustrate some clear conclusions about how "Cloud RAN" applies to in-building networks. Mobile Experts uses their typical approach, avoiding hype and pretense and instead delivering clear, hard-earned vision of in-building wireless architectures with regard to technical factors and business model imperatives.
"Cloud RAN terminology is confusing for everyone, and in particular the words 'centralization' and 'virtualization' are used differently for in-building systems," commented Chief Analyst Joe Madden. "We're clearing things up with 30 diagrams to illustrate how DAS and Small Cell products are evolving, as well as the DRS systems such as LampSite and Radio Dot. Almost all the major mobile operators have plans to move in the direction of Cloud RAN, but while the operators focus on the macro network, the same concepts are being put to work indoors, probably with even greater impact."
According to the report, the impact of CRAN/VRAN can be as much as 30% higher capacity due to improved reception and interference coordination with the outdoor macro network, or using Joint Transmission/Joint Reception indoors. The best approach depends on the building type and the business model followed for the indoor coverage solution.
"In the end, the big prize is the enterprise mobile infrastructure market. It's a small market today, with DAS and small cell vendors installing equipment in projects funded by the building owner and approved haphazardly by operators. Whoever does get Embedded DAS or Multi-operator DRS right, with blanket approval by major operators, will be able to address a huge pool of opportunity—in the range of $150 Billion," commented Chief Analyst Joe Madden.
