MLK Day Offers Opportunity to Put Citizenship and Service in Action
Federal agency calls on media to raise awareness of service opportunities available across the nation
WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As America prepares to celebrate the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the federal agency responsible for AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and the nation's volunteer efforts calls on Americans to honor Dr. King's legacy through volunteer service. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) is providing tools and resources to help members of the media connect citizens to local volunteer opportunities.
Finding a local service event in your community for MLK Day is as easy as visiting MLKDay.gov and entering your ZIP code. Additional resources for media, including public service announcements, are available here.
Acting on a shared belief that everyone has a role to play in making our country stronger, across the nation families, students, employees, and individuals will unite and demonstrate their citizenship through service to one another. Service projects, many of which are led by AmeriCorps and Senior Corps members, will include delivering meals, building and improving homes, refurbishing schools, collecting food and clothing, rebuilding communities affected by recent disasters, providing services for veterans and military families, and more.
In 1994, Congress designated MLK Day as a national day of service and charged CNCS with leading this effort. For more information about CNCS or national service, please visit nationalservice.gov.
