Mitchell Institute Forum to Discuss Long Range Strike
ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Air Force Association's Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies will host a discussion with Lt. Gen. Stephen Wilson, Commander, Air Force Global Strike Command.
The event will be held Thursday, October 9, 2014, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Key Bridge Marriott—14th Floor, at 1401 Lee Highway, Arlington, Virginia.
Whether serving as a strategic deterrent, regional shaping tool, or as a platform that can span the globe--long range strike stands as a strategic imperative for the nation. However, with 47% of the long range strike fleet produced before the Cuban Missile Crisis and 87% of the inventory predating stealth technology, it is important to focus on steps required to keep this capability viable for decades into the future. General Wilson will discuss present and anticipated operational variables, steps necessary to recapitalize the fleet, and fiscal priorities within the Command.
As Commander of the Air Force's Global Strike Command, Lt Gen Wilson is responsible for organizing, training, equipping and maintaining all U.S. intercontinental ballistic missiles and nuclear-capable bomber forces. The command's mission is to develop and provide combat-ready forces for nuclear deterrence and global strike operations to support the President of the United States and combatant commanders. The command comprises more than 23,000 professionals operating at various locations around the globe. The command's six wings control the nation's entire inventory of Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles, B-2 and B-52 bomber aircraft.
