Global Sports Nostalgia Co. Releases NBA Jersey Celebrating 63-Point Playoff Performance
PHILADELPHIA, March 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- On Friday March 11th, 2016 as part of their ongoing partnership with Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand, Mitchell & Ness will release the 1985-86 Michael Jordan 63-Point Playoff Game Road Authentic Jersey. Retailing at $275, the jersey release marks the 30th anniversary of this heroic feat. Mitchell & Ness is producing this jersey for the first time, featuring a mesh body with heat pressed logo, name, and numbers.
In the third game of the 1985-86 season, Michael Jordan injured his foot, causing him to miss 64 games. The Bulls compiled a record of 30-52 but made the playoffs while simultaneously setting the fifth worst record of any playoff bound team at the time. Despite his circumstances, Jordan was still voted as a NBA All-Star Game starter, though unable to participate. He returned to the court in mid-March, playing the remaining fifteen regular season games and transitioned right into the playoffs.
In the first round the Bulls faced the Celtics, a team that many considered to be one of the NBA's all-time greatest with five of their top six players being future Hall of Famers. In the first game of the opening round, Michael tallied 49 points in a blowout lost. He nearly put together a triple-double in the third & final game of the series, only missing the feat by a single assist. However, the second game made history.
In the second game of the series in Boston, Jordan put on a display that is still talked about to this day. Commonly referred to as the "63-Point Game", Jordan entered the record books scoring the most points ever in a playoff game. The Celtics won the game in double overtime, but it's Jordan's performance that will be remembered forever. His stat line read 22 for 41 from the field, 19 for 21 from the free throw line, 5rebs, 6asts, and 3stls. The performance's cultural effect was felt as it was ranked one of the most memorable moments in television history and enhanced the public perception of the NBA in the US. Jordan was also voted the Miller Lite Player of the Game notwithstanding the loss.
Here are two Larry Bird's quotes regarding Jordan's play in Game 2:
"He is the most exciting, awesome player in the game today. I think it's just God disguised as Michael Jordan."
"He was hitting outside shots, driving to the hole. We had about everyone on the team guarding him…". "He obviously was in a zone. He kept them in the game with big basket after big basket. We couldn't stop him. We tried to shade him to help, everything. You were talking about a different type of talent."
