Peeters to champion the importance of literacy among young children throughout her reign
CHARLESTON, W.Va., Aug. 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Miss Teen California International, Carly Peeters, 16, of Porter Ranch, Calif., was crowned Miss Teen International 2017, Saturday, Aug. 5 at the Annual Miss Teen International Pageant held in its new home of Charleston, W.Va. The three-hour event took place at The Clay Center, featuring 30 contestants from around the world competing in four categories, including interview, fitness-wear, fun fashion and evening gown.
The International Pageants system promotes community service with the emphasis on each contestant's competition score based on their knowledge of and work with their platform. Throughout her reign, Peeters will promote the importance of literacy among young children through her work with Jumpstart, an early education organization that provides programming for preschool children from under resourced communities, and Build On, an international organization that builds schools in developing countries.
"My Mom immigrated from the Philippines and taught me that you can do anything you want with a good education," said Peeters. "She instilled in me a love of reading and learning and I want to pass this love on to at-risk children to help them succeed. I knew the International Pageants system would help me achieve my goal and my new role will give me an amazing opportunity to promote my platform."
During her reign, Peeters plans to raise funds to build another school through the Build On organization and develop a national reading challenge to support Jumpstart's programming.
Peeters is entering her senior year at Granada Hills Charter High School and will study finance and film in college. Having a passion for the performing arts, Peeters recently starred in A Cowgirl's Story (available on Netflix).
