Miss America 2015 Receives Domestic Violence Advocacy Award From The Weinberg Center For Elder Abuse Prevention
RIVERDALE, N.Y., Dec. 18, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Kira Kazantsev, Miss America 2015, received today the first annual "Make the Call" award by the Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, located at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale, for her advocacy efforts on behalf of domestic violence victims. The Weinberg Center, the nation's first elder abuse shelter, has taken a leadership role in domestic violence advocacy within the workplace through the "It's Your Call" program – the first domestic violence employee resource program within a long-term care facility.
"Through the 'Love Shouldn't Hurt' initiative, Miss America 2015 has spent countless hours changing people's minds about domestic violence through education and frank conversation," said Daniel Reingold, President and CEO of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. "This award is in recognition of her commitment to raising awareness and starting the dialogue that will hopefully end domestic violence."
One in four women, and one in seven men in the United States will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes.
"As Miss America 2015, I am committed to casting a spotlight on the issue of domestic violence and to empowering victims to break the cycle of power and control and create new lives of safety and freedom," said Ms. Kazantsev. "I am grateful to the Hebrew Home and the Weinberg Center for taking a leadership position to end elder abuse and domestic violence, two life-threatening issues that impact families daily."
The Weinberg Center for Elder Abuse Prevention is the nation's first elder abuse shelter, and has provided over 61,000 days of emergency shelter since its 2005 opening.
The Hebrew Home at Riverdale is the nation's leading senior care organization, caring for over 10,000 older adults throughout the New York metropolitan area daily.
