Miscarriage Myth Busted: Planned Parenthood Caught Lying About Personhood -- Personhood USA
DENVER, Oct. 17, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Planned Parenthood has been caught lying to voters, telling them that personhood amendments would criminalize miscarriage and allow police to investigate women who miscarry.
A recent segment on KUSA-Denver explained that Planned Parenthood admitted they "couldn't point to any legislation in Colorado or elsewhere that specifically says women who have miscarriages could be questioned, and they couldn't give any cases of this happening in other states that didn't involve extenuating circumstances like drugs or violence."
Unfortunately, some other media outlets have been fooled by Planned Parenthood's lies and misinformed viewers about the effects of adopting a personhood amendment.
"Thirty-eight other states have passed fetal homicide laws, yet none of these states investigate women for miscarriages," said Jennifer Mason, Communications Director of Personhood USA. "Nations such as Ireland and Malta, which have essentially adopted personhood in their national constitutions, have never investigated women for miscarriages. This unfounded accusation from Planned Parenthood is a blatant fabrication intended to scare and mislead voters."
Over the past six years, Planned Parenthood has spent tens of millions of dollars to spread mistruths about the effects of adopting personhood measures. In 2014, they pledged $3.8 million to anti-personhood campaigns.
Another mistruth spread by Planned Parenthood is that personhood would prosecute pregnant women who receive life-saving cancer treatments, a claim which is both legally and medically inaccurate.
"State laws already provide legal immunity for doctors who make good faith efforts to preserve the lives of pregnant women and their unborn children in the course of medical treatment," said Jennifer Mason. "Moreover, leading experts in cancer during pregnancy, such as Dr. Frédéric Amant, affirm that there is never a medical circumstance which requires a doctor to intentionally kill an unborn child in order to treat a pregnant woman for cancer. His view is supported by over 200 OB/GYNs and 700 other medical professionals."
In his presentation to the International Symposium on Maternal Healthcare, Dr. Amant outlines various methods of cancer treatment in pregnancy which protect both the mother and child.
Mason concluded: "Planned Parenthood and their allies, the so-called National Advocates for Pregnant Women, have a track record of defending instances of infanticide and prenatal child abuse while improperly calling it 'miscarriage.' They have zero credibility and no interest in protecting either pregnant woman or their unborn children."
Personhood USA calls on media outlets to perform due diligence in fact-checking Planned Parenthood's false claims in light of the legal and medical evidence.
