PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Oct. 2, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Former professional tennis player Jenny Klitch brought one gold and two bronze medals home to Mirasol after strong individual and team performances at the International Tennis Federation's Senior World Championships in Ulm, Germany.
Ms. Klitch was selected by the United States Tennis Association as one of four players to represent the US in the Women's 50s event, also known as the Maria Bueno Cup. The Team Championships saw 68 men's teams and 51 women's teams compete across six cups in the 50, 55, and 60 age categories. Ms. Klitch and Women's 50 Team USA were looking for redemption, as they lost a heartbreaking final to Germany last year. This year, she and her teammates defeated Australia, Austria, Spain, and France to make the finals, where Team USA and Germany faced off again. This time, Team USA came out on top, defeating the strong German team in their home country, and bringing home gold medals and the Maria Bueno Cup trophy.
The second week of tennis competition was the individual event. In singles, Ms. Klitch was seeded 15th, but upset the 4th and 5th seeded players before losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Klaartje Van Baarle. Despite being unseeded in the doubles competition, Ms. Klitch and her partner, Andrea Rice, earned a third place finish.
Mirasol co-hosted the ITF Senior Individual World Championships in 2014 and has submitted a joint bid with three other local clubs to host the 2020 ITF Individual Senior World Championships. The community boasts seven active women's teams in the Palm Beach County Women's Tennis Association (PBCWTA) league, the most of any private residential club in South Florida. This year, Mirasol became the only private residential club to win the Division 1 championship, and will be the first private residential club in the PBCWTA league to be accepted into the Open Division this fall.
