MinuteClinic Supporting Diabetes Month with Free Diabetes Screenings
WOONSOCKET, R.I., Nov. 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- MinuteClinic is helping take a stand against diabetes by offering free diabetes screenings at clinic locations throughout November. The screenings, sponsored by Bayer Healthcare, will enable thousands of individuals at risk for diabetes or pre-diabetes to monitor their risk and begin taking steps to control it.
The screening is available to patients at over 600 MinuteClinic locations inside select CVS/pharmacy stores. MinuteClinic is open seven days a week, including evenings and weekends, and no appointment is necessary. The screening visit begins with a general assessment of lifestyle risk factors for diabetes, followed by a blood glucose test for which patients will receive immediate results and recommendations from the MinuteClinic practitioner. The practitioners are also able to answer questions and refer patients to a primary care physician if additional follow-up is necessary.
"Approximately seven million Americans are living undiagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes, putting them at risk for serious complications," says MinuteClinic Chief Medical Officer Nancy Gagliano, M.D. "By providing convenient diabetes screenings at no cost, we hope to expand awareness of diabetes risk factors and help put some of our patients back on the path to better health."
In addition to the diabetes screening service, MinuteClinic offers comprehensive health condition monitoring for individuals diagnosed with diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure.
MinuteClinic practitioners diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for common family illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder and bronchial infections. Skin conditions, minor wounds, abrasions and joint sprains are treated, and common vaccinations for influenza, tetanus, pneumonia, pertussis and Hepatitis A & B are offered at each location. Walk-in camp, sports and college physicals are available daily.

The service is available through Nov. 30, 2012 or while supplies last and is not offered in Massachusetts. Patients must be 18 years of age or older and there is a limit of one screening per customer. Outside of the free offer, monitoring services for individuals with diabetes are available at MinuteClinic for $79 or an insurance co-pay.
