Minnesota Childhood Injury Summit Targets Key Injury Topics

ST. PAUL, Minn., Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Minneapolis school patrol program coordinator Agent Antoine Berryman and AAA Minnesota/Iowa were recognized today at the fifth annual Minnesota Childhood Injury Summit in St. Paul for making a difference in preventing unintentional injuries to children.

The Champion of Child Safety Award was presented by conference coordinators to Agent Berryman for his work in keeping children safe on their way to and from school through the Minneapolis School Safety Patrol program, which he coordinates for the city's Police Department.

AAA Minnesota/Iowa received the award for its leadership in preventing traffic-related injuries to children through activities including community partnerships and awareness campaigns, creation of educational materials and public policy initiatives.

The Champion of Child Safety award recognizes significant contributions by an individual or an organization in preventing unintentional injuries to children. The awards were presented at the state's annual childhood injury prevention conference, the Minnesota Childhood Injury Summit, presented by Safe Kids Minnesota, the Minnesota Safety Council and the Minnesota Department of Health.

The event featured local and national experts speaking on critical topics in childhood injury prevention. Keynote speaker Torine Creppy, Chief Program Officer for Safe Kids Worldwide, Washington, D.C., provided a national perspective on strategies, trends and emerging issues.

Unintentional injuries ("accidents") are the leading cause of death among children in Minnesota and nationwide. The goal of the summit is to offer information, tools and effective strategies to support the prevention of unintentional injuries among Minnesota's children.

The Minnesota Childhood Injury Summit is presented by Safe Kids Minnesota, the Minnesota Safety Council and the Minnesota Department of Health with additional sponsorship from Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Emergency Medical Services for Children, Hennepin County Medical Center, Mayo Clinic, Johnson & Johnson, North Memorial Medical Center, Regions Hospital/Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare, and the University of Minnesota Amplatz Children's Hospital.
