Minister Shelly Glover announces funding for arts organizations in Manitoba
WINNIPEG, Dec. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for nine Winnipeg-based arts organizations.
Several festivals are receiving support, including KidsFest, the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival. Funding will also support activities such as community concerts and youth workshops presented by the West End Cultural Centre and programming at the Centre culturel franco-manitobain. More than 540,000 people are expected to attend and benefit from the artistic and cultural programming offered by the nine organizations over the next two years.
"Thanks to today's investment, Manitobans and visitors of all ages will have access to a wide range of great cultural experiences in and around the city," said Minister Glover. "Our Government is pleased to support these organizations, because we recognize that the arts strengthen our communities and contribute to the cultural and economic vitality of our city and our province."
"As a not-for-profit organization, the Winnipeg Folk Festival greatly values its ongoing partnership with the Government of Canada," said Lynne Skromeda, Executive Director of the Winnipeg Folk Festival. "Music is such a positive and powerful force in our community. This funding allows us to continue to bring music to the lives of so many people in Winnipeg through our summer festival and year-round programs. We are incredibly grateful for this support."
The Government of Canada is providing funding of $1,064,600 through the Canada Arts Presentation Fund of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This fund gives Canadians increased access to the variety and richness of Canada's culture through professional arts festivals, presentations of live professional performances, and other artistic experiences.
