Minister Moore Announces Support for Stanley Park's 125th Anniversary Celebrations
VANCOUVER, May 30, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Minister Responsible for British Columbia, today announced support for Celebrate! Stanley Park, a summer festival commemorating the Park's 125th anniversary this year.
"Stanley Park has been one of Vancouver's most prized attractions, and this year we are proud to celebrate its 125th anniversary," said Minister Moore. "Our Government's investment will support commemorative activities to honour the occasion. We encourage all Canadians to visit Stanley Park and join the celebrations."
Stanley Park—designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1988—will celebrate its anniversary in style. Activities to honour the occasion include historical lectures, theatrical presentations and musical performances. As well, residents and visitors will be treated to visual arts installations, family entertainment and interactive sporting activities.
"Our Government is proud to invest in celebrations and commemorations, like Stanley Park's 125th anniversary, that contribute to our collective identity and define who we are as Canadians," added Minister Moore. "On the road to Canada's 150th birthday in 2017, let us celebrate all of the things that make Canada the united, strong and free country we are today."
"The Vancouver Park Board gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Government of Canada for the 125th anniversary celebrations of Vancouver's first, largest and most beloved park," said Sarah Blyth, Board Chair. "This family-friendly event will feature lively performances, including First Nations cultural experiences, in the spectacular setting of Stanley Park."
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $90,500 to the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
