Minister Lebel issues a statement on the report into the Aéropro accident

OTTAWA, Aug. 15, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released its report into the June 2010 Aéropro accident in Quebec City and the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, made the following statement:

"This accident was a tragedy and today, the families of those involved are first and foremost in my thoughts and in the minds of everyone at Transport Canada.

"I would like to thank the TSB for its work on this investigation. I am deeply concerned that, as the report states, the significant measures taken by Transport Canada did not have the expected results.

"Public safety is at the heart of Transport Canada's work and this government takes all transportation accidents seriously.

"It is important to note that the TSB acknowledges action taken by Transport Canada to improve its surveillance program since this accident occurred.

"As well, I would like to thank the Quebec Coroner's Office, which released its report today. Transport Canada will thoroughly review its findings.

"Transport Canada revoked Aéropro's Air Operator Certificate (AOC) on July 31, 2010 and the company is no longer providing air transportation services.

"Canada has one of the safest aviation systems in the world. We will continue working to improve regulations, strengthen the surveillance program, and enhance training."
