Minister Glover Announces Support for Manitoba's Francophone Community
WINNIPEG, Oct. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced funding for 16 Franco-Manitoban organizations.
This funding will help several Manitoba organizations promote the development of the province's Francophone and Francophile community. The organizations benefiting from this support include the Economic Development Council for Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (CDEM) and Radio communautaire du Manitoba.
"In the Speech from the Throne, our Government highlighted how Canada's two national languages position our country uniquely in the world, as a federation in which Francophones thrive and celebrate a unique culture, in solidarity with fellow Canadians," said Minister Glover. "Manitoba's Francophone community is alive and well, thanks in part to the work of organizations that support the strength and vitality of the French language in this province. The investments we are announcing today will help them continue that important work in their communities."
"As a funding recipient, CDEM—along with its partners—is able to offer quality services that help ensure the durability of the communities it serves," said Louis Allain, Director General of CDEM. "By calling upon the strengths of our environment, we succeed in offering programming that responds to the needs and aspirations of our communities."
Among the projects that will receive support are the third phase of the Société historique de Saint-Boniface oral history project and the Centre culturel franco-manitobain mentoring project for volunteer and non-professional artists.
The Government of Canada has provided funding of $2,686,100 through the Official Languages Support Programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage. These programs aim to enhance the development of official-language minority communities and promote both official languages in Canadian society.
