Minister Blaney Marks Victory in Europe Day
OTTAWA, May 8, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs and the Minister for La Francophonie, today issued the following statement today regarding the 68th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day).
"Sixty-eight years ago the war in Europe came to an official end. On this day, we remember the sacrifices and achievements of the brave men and women who fought for freedom, democracy and the rule of law during the Second World War.
"During the Second World War, more than one million Canadians put their lives on hold to defend our freedom in Canada and on foreign soil. Tragically, more than 45,000 made the ultimate sacrifice and another 55,000 were wounded. This was a remarkable sacrifice for our young nation which had a population of only 11 million people.
"Canada's contributions in the Second World War helped define Canada as a nation and shape the country in which we live. Canadians on the home front also played a vital role during the war. They helped keep the economy going, which helped the Allies achieve victory.
"Today we are reminded to thank all Veterans for their heroic efforts to protect our freedom. On this particular day, Canada remembers not only the sacrifices and achievements of those who served in the Second World War, but also the pride with which they represented our nation leading up to the victory in Europe. We will remember. Lest we forget."
