Minister Blaney issues statement following the House of Commons' adoption of the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015

OTTAWA, May 6, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement after the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 passed third reading in the House of Commons and was referred to the Senate.

"I am pleased that our Government's Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 was adopted in the House of Commons and will now be considered by the Senate. This legislation highlights our Government's continued commitment to taking swift action to combat jihadi terrorism and protect Canadians and their families. The Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 will provide our police forces and national security agencies with the tools  they need to protect Canadians against serious and evolving threats from terrorist organizations like ISIS.

The Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 was announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and introduced in the House of Commons on January 30, 2015. Our Government's legislation will provide law enforcement with the additional tools they need to prevent, detect, deny and respond to threats. These measures would also target terrorist recruitment by creating a new offence of advocating or promotion of terrorism.

Our Government will continue to take the necessary steps to help ensure the safety and security of Canadians from the ever evolving threat of jihadi terrorism"
