Minister Blaney condemns recent Al Qaeda comments

OTTAWA, June 25, 2015 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made the following statement today condemning an interview released by Al Qaeda condoning October's attacks and suggesting Canada as a target for future terrorist attacks.

"Al Qaeda has once again demonstrated its violent and barbaric nature by condoning attacks on Canadians.

Canada will not sit on the sidelines in the fight against groups, such as the barbaric death cult known as ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) and we will not be intimidated by jihadi terrorists. Our police forces remain vigilant and have measures in place to prevent and address any terrorist threats to Canada and our citizens. We will not overreact, but not underreact, as we continue to stand firm against terrorist groups who wish to threaten our peace, freedom and democracy.

Terrorism remains the most real and present danger to Canada's national security. This is why our Government passed the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015 to better protect Canadians against terrorist threats by providing our police forces with the tools they need to keep Canadians safe."
