Minister Blaney commends RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) in Montreal, on National Security Arrests

OTTAWA, April 20, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, made this statement following the laying of criminal charges under the terrorism provisions of the Criminal Code against two individuals. The charges include the offence of attempting to leave Canada for the purpose of participating in the activity of a terrorist group, facilitating terrorist activity and using explosives.

"I commend the RCMP for their continued vigilance towards keeping our streets and communities safe. I also wish to underscore the important public support, and thank the citizens who helped our national security agencies in this investigation. Together our efforts will serve to protect Canadians from terrorists who wish to cause harm and threaten our freedom.

Our Government is determined to confront the terrorist threat at home. That is why we introduced the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015 to give our law enforcement and national security agencies the tools they need to better protect Canadians against these ever-evolving threats of jihadi terrorists.

As this matter is now before the courts, it would be inappropriate for me to comment any further."
