Minister Blaney commends RCMP on the laying of terrorism charges

OTTAWA, June 9, 2015 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Canada's Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, commended the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on the laying of terrorism charges in absentia against Ahmad Waseem. He was charged under the Criminal Code for facilitating a terrorist activity; participating in terrorist activity; and leaving Canada to participate in the activities of a terrorist group.

"I would like to commend the RCMP for their thorough investigation that led to an arrest warrant and an INTERPOL Red Notice being issued for Mr. Waseem. I am confident that the RCMP will continue to work closely with its domestic and international law enforcement partners to combat terrorism and ensure the safety of Canadians.  

Terrorism remains the most significant threat to Canada's national security. This is why our Government tabled the Protection of Canada from Terrorists Act and the Anti-terrorism Act, 2015, to ensure that our police forces have the tools they need to protect Canadians against the real and present danger posed by terrorism."
