Slattery was motivated to make the personal donation by his admiration for the work of the internationally recognized anesthesiologist and pain specialist, Dr. Alex Cahana. A faculty member of the UW Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Cahana is chief of UW's Division of Pain Medicine, where he is leading the creation of the National Pain Registry and is developing the Washington State Opioid Reform Initiative.
"James Slattery's generous gift of $2 million to the Division of Pain Medicine will make C-PRIME's mission of increasing the understanding of pain, improving pain management, and developing new methods to prevent suffering and pain-related disability become a reality through comparative effectiveness research (CER) of treatments," Cahana said. "We greatly appreciate his support of higher education and research in this manner."
UW's C-PRIME is a patient-centered outcomes research institute, as defined in the new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), more commonly referred to as healthcare reform. Its goal is to determine the best course of care and to function as an integrated center of excellence dedicated to leadership and innovation in outcomes research.
"I can think of no better way to help all people everywhere than to support those researchers and educational institutions that are advancing the alleviation of pain and human suffering," Slattery said.
UW's C-PRIME further aspires to disseminate CER knowledge to educate health care professionals, clinical investigators, and public policy makers, and to help the millions of pain sufferers in the U.S. by eliminating the illness burden of chronic pain in our society.
