Military Officers and Senior NCOs Graduate from Dense Urban Studies Seminar in NYC
FT. HAMILTON, N.Y., Oct. 8, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The IDB Dense Urban Studies (DUS) Seminar honored its third class of military graduates from the U.S. Army, U.S. Marines, and British Armed Forces on Friday, September 28, 2018 with a ceremony presided over by Ambassador (Ret.) David Litt. This is the second iteration in 2018.
The IDB DUS Seminar was administered by the Institute for Defense and Business as part of the U.S. Army's Strategic Broadening Seminar initiative and hosted at Fort Hamilton with the support of the U.S. Army Garrison there.
The program is a two week intensive educational and experiential learning opportunity for students to explore and understand the people, infrastructure and economy of cities, including the coordination and cooperation of city organizations and governments, and the culture and behavior of people and their environment in dense urban areas.
During the 2018 IDB DUS seminars, each class of 20 or more students spent time in the classroom with some of the most renowned urban studies scholars from universities in New York City, North Carolina and Georgia. Equally vital to their experience were off-site visits to major players in New York's government "eco-system," such as FDNY, NYC Emergency Management, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. These were complemented by meetings in Manhattan and Brooklyn with technology incubator, banking, and cybersecurity experts as well as a visit to the New York Stock Exchange.
The knowledge and skills gathered from the above experiences culminated in capstone projects presented on graduation day. Through a team presentation before a panel of esteemed guests, the participants applied the curriculum and demonstrated how they themselves would approach scenarios in a "megacity" or dense urban area worldwide, including humanitarian assistance and disaster relief for natural disasters.
Future programs are expected to take place in 2019.
