SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Military families can receive a basket of free groceries and learn about healthy eating thanks to a new campaign from the national nonprofit Operation Homefront. The organization, which provides emergency financial and other assistance to military families, today announced its Growing Healthy Military Families campaign, a series of events this Fall in cities across America that will help military families learn about healthy eating and give them the tools to make a healthy diet part of their lifestyle.
Military families are urged to register online at OperationHomefront.net for events in their area. Growing Healthy Military Families events will take place in October and November in the following locales:
- Colorado Springs, Colorado
- Mount Vernon, Illinois
- Ft Wayne and New Albany, Indiana
- Fort Knox and Fort Campbell, Kentucky
- Dorchester, Massachusetts
- Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri
- Taylor and Battle Creek, Michigan
- Lawton/Fort Sill and Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma
- Horsham and Annville, Pennsylvania
Details on eligibility, event dates and times, and information on how military families can register for events are available at OperationHomefront.net.
At each event, military families will learn how to choose healthy foods at the supermarket; avoid reliance on pre-package and heavily processed foods; plan and create healthy, tasty meals and snacks; get the most out of their grocery budget; and learn to grow herbs and vegetables in their own gardens. Each family will also receive a healthy food basket filled with nutritious food items, a healthy cookbook or gift card, and a starter kit for growing herbs or vegetables.
The Growing Healthy Military Families is a natural fit for Operation Homefront, which has provided food assistance to thousands of military families as part of its emergency financial assistance program.
"Our military families, particularly the lower- and mid-grade service members that Operation Homefront serves, face significant budget challenges where eating healthy can often fall victim to available time and perceived cost," said Tim Farrell, Chief Operating Officer for the nonprofit. "Eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive or time consuming. We want to help military families find ways to have a healthy lifestyle that goes hand-in-hand with the financial sustainability that is the focus of our emergency food and financial assistance."
