ALTON, Ill., June 28, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The 5th Annual Washington Memorial Miles for Meso 5K Run/Walk aims to raise money for mesothelioma research. The event will take place at 9 a.m. July 4 at the Federal Way Community Center in Federal Way, Wash.
The WA Memorial Miles for Meso race is organized by Pat Dyhrman, Diana Stewart and Pat Hatley in memory of their husbands. Weyerhaeuser Company geologist Dick Dyhrman, Federal Way High School teacher and coach Bob Stewart, and Federal Way School District Athletic Director Bud Hatley, respectively, all died of mesothelioma.
"The significance of this race is that we are honoring three distinguished men who died from mesothelioma," said Diana Stewart. "The event allows us to also honor all others in the state of Washington who have died of mesothelioma."
Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure and has no cure. Approximately, 3,000 Americans are diagnosed each year.
Miles for Meso is an advocacy project of the Simmons Mesothelioma Foundation, a private, non-profit organization founded by Simmons Hanly Conroy, one of the leading mesothelioma law firms in the country. The foundation is dedicated to helping patients and families affected by mesothelioma. Since the inaugural Miles for Meso race in 2009, races have taken place in nine states. The events have raised nearly $450,000 to benefit mesothelioma research and awareness.
Through this year's Washington race, organizers hope to raise $15,000 to benefit the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to ending mesothelioma by funding research and providing education and resources for mesothelioma patients and their families. Since its inception, the Washington Miles for Meso race has raised more than $60,000 for mesothelioma research.
Race winners in various age groups will receive prices and all race participants will receive a T-shirt. The event also will feature the Kid's Dash event beginning at 8:45 a.m., with medals awarded to children who participate. Other planned activities and attractions include face painting, massages, and a breakfast of baked goods and juice that will be served in the community center following the race.
Check-in for the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. on July 4. Pre-registration for the race costs $35. To register or for additional information, visit the event website at http://milesformesowamemorial5k.weebly.com.
