Midland University's Innovative Code Academy Recognized by US Department of Education
Secretary Betsy DeVos visited Omaha campus as part of nationwide "Rethink School" tour
OMAHA, Neb., Sept. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the successful launch of its Code Academy in June, Midland University was proud to feature this breakout program and welcome U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to its new Omaha campus on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Designed by tech professionals, the Midland University Code Academy is a unique, first-in-the-region program that aims to prepare students for a rewarding career in coding and web development while studying part time in Omaha just a few nights a week.
"Businesses in Omaha and throughout the State of Nebraska and the entire Midwest need skilled coders and web developers," said lead faculty member Micah Yost. "We developed the Midland University Code Academy to meet this growing need, and are thrilled that the Department of Education has already taken notice of our efforts."
The Code Academy currently offers a 10-month program with three unique courses. These courses teach students the skills needed to be effective web developers. It also provides the opportunity to build a portfolio and professional network to empower students as they enter the job market. Those who sign up for all three courses can receive financial incentives and will also be enrolled in a Midland career placement network upon completion. The program's inaugural class includes a diverse group of 11 students, with growing demand for the next cohort, which starts in January 2018.
"At Midland University, we aspire to lead with purpose and provide pioneering programs that deliver dynamic and relevant learning experiences for our students. Our Code Academy is a perfect example of those values coming together," said Midland University President Jody Horner. "Midland University's Code Academy will produce career ready graduates with real world experience that will benefit businesses throughout Omaha and the broader Silicon Prairie region."
Secretary DeVos' visit to Midland University's Code Academy was one stop on a nationwide tour of schools and programs that are developing and driving innovation in education to meet students' individual needs.
