Mid-Market CEOs Must Influence Policy Discussions in Washington to Ensure Government Action Is Taken for the Good of the Country, Says Keynote at CEO Connection Mid-Market Convention
2013 CEO Connection Mid-Market Convention, Hosted by CEO Connection and the Wharton School in Philadelphia, Shines Spotlight on Mid-Market's Significant Contribution to U.S. Economy
PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The CEO Connection Mid-Market Convention on Oct. 21-22, 2013, successfully brought together some of the best thinkers of academia and business, as well as prominent government officials and subject matter experts, for the world's premier gathering of mid-market executives.
Attendees convened on such topics as impacting education to fill jobs created by mid-market companies; improving leadership performance by integrating work, home, community and self; crafting the best healthcare programs for employees in the mid-market; using social media to drive ROI; corporate security versus employee privacy; moving beyond CSR to CSI (corporate social impact); reaching emerging markets—and many, many more.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter got the proceedings off to a rousing start with his take on leading the city as a $6 billion company, followed by a keynote address from former Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell. Rendell addressed topics ranging from the long-term benefits and ROI from public/private partnerships, what great government leadership means, Washington, D.C.'s current dysfunction and bold steps to put the U.S. back on solid ground.
The second day's keynote speaker was Jostein Solheim, CEO of Ben & Jerry's, who spoke about what it means to be a mission-driven for-profit company, and the culture that formulates in a work atmosphere fueled not by the "what" but by the "why." He also illustrated how being socially responsible and socially engaged—mentioning that Ben & Jerry's added millions of dollars of cost to become a fair-trade company—can build a robust and trusted brand.
"The convention helped give mid-market stakeholders the voice they critically need in a world where the middle market plays a tremendous part in the economy but too often lacks recognition and share of voice—indeed, mid-market organizations account for more than $5 trillion of the U.S. GDP and represents 40 million employees," said Ken Beck, CEO of CEO Connection. "This event marked the beginning of a new era of impact by and for the mid-market."
Convention officials agreed the event carved a space for the underemphasized mid-market and will continue to leverage the weight of these companies for the benefit of the U.S. economy as a whole. Mid-market organizations drive a massive amount of global trade, and their CEOS are experts in leading complex businesses and creatively using resources of which they're allocated.
The mission of the convention was to bring mid-market stakeholders together to share ideas, help each other and change the world, a prerogative that will continue at the next annual convention, set to take place Oct. 20-21, 2014. Visit MidMarketConvention.com for more information.
