REDWOOD CITY, Calif., July 31, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a newly published report by Dell'Oro Group, the trusted source for market information about the networking and telecommunications industries, point-to-point Microwave Transmission radio unit shipments are forecast to grow at an average annual rate of nearly 10 percent over the next five years, through 2018.
"While we think some of the factors reducing demand for microwave equipment will persist," said Jimmy Yu, Vice President of Microwave Transmission research at Dell'Oro Group. "Issues such as network consolidation and fiber expansion are expected to be permanent features of the market dynamics. However, a reversal of demand in two of the largest regional markets for microwave mobile backhaul, Europe and India, will see higher sales into these geographies, providing a cornerstone to the microwave market's positive growth through to 2018," Yu added.
Two key takeaways from the Microwave Transmission report are:
- Packet microwave is forecast to record the highest growth rate among the microwave technology segments (TDM, hybrid, and packet) with unit shipments expected to grow at an average annual rate of 24 percent through 2018.
- Strong growth rates are projected for full outdoor unit (FODU) configured products as operators install ultra-high capacity links and roll out small cells. Ultra-high capacity systems operate in the V-band and E-band frequencies, which are unlicensed or lightly licensed.
