MicroStrategy Unveils Gateway for Facebook to Connect Enterprise Applications with the Social Network
Introduces Powerful New Technology that Brings Social Intelligence and Social Network Interaction to Enterprise Applications
MONTE CARLO, Monaco, July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MicroStrategy® Incorporated (Nasdaq: MSTR), a leading worldwide provider of business intelligence (BI) software, announced today that the company is introducing Gateway for Facebook, a new cloud-based service that can interconnect enterprise IT environments and enterprise applications with the Facebook social graph. Gateway for Facebook converts the Facebook social graph data structure into a relational data structure, making it instantly suitable for enterprise applications like CRM, marketing, service, sales, loyalty, and mobile applications. Gateway offers bidirectional data flow so that social intelligence from Facebook can be added to enterprise applications, and enterprise applications can interact back with the social network.
Through this two-way communication, companies can inject social intelligence into enterprise applications transforming them into "friendly" applications – inherently mobile, social, and personal – that simplify and enhance the consumer experience. For instance, a phone company could offer a friendly phone app that synchronizes with Facebook data to keep the contact information for all of a user's Facebook friends up to date. With just a name, a user could instantly call, email, or send mail to any of their Facebook friends without having to look it up or keep track of future changes.
With this announcement, MicroStrategy is establishing its intention to be a leader in the emerging social applications space.
"CEOs across many industries are committing their enterprises to establishing social media strategies, but very few have a clear idea of what to do, and even fewer have the technology to carry out their vision," said Michael J. Saylor, chairman and CEO of MicroStrategy. "We believe intelligent social applications, anchored by Gateway for Facebook, will be a revolutionary new class of apps that are inherently friendly."
Features of Gateway
Gateway incorporates a broad set of features to promote efficient interaction with the Facebook database and high-performance response to enterprise applications:
- Facebook Compliant - The MicroStrategy Gateway uses Facebook's open graph APIs and strictly adheres to Facebook's policy for data access and privacy
- Rich Data query - Gateway can execute chained queries that generate rich query results by traversing social network pathways
- High Efficiency Query Algorithms - Gateway automatically combines multiple overlapping queries into single APIs to minimize the load on Facebook and maximize performance
- Real-time Data Response – Gateway maintains an operational database to house the social graph data, ensuring that the data is available to applications, even when connectivity to Facebook is limited.
- Facebook Governing Process-aware - Gateway has self-monitoring features that help prevent its data requests from exceeding Facebook's governed maximums, and automatically restricts query submission if the governed levels are approached
- Highly Scalable - Gateway is built using an MPP architecture enabling it to scale to hundreds of millions of people
With Gateway, a wide range of developers and technologies will be able to inject social intelligence, personalization, and social interactivity into their applications. This includes Microsoft Windows developers, mobile app developers for Apple iOS and Google Android, and ERP systems from Oracle, SAP, and Microsoft. Even custom-built Facebook applications can use the Gateway as a simpler and more efficient access mechanism, particularly when the queries require a real-time response.
"As we help companies leverage the rich and continuously refreshed data generated by Facebook, we will also provide the tools that enable them to effectively engage their customers and build brand loyalty with more meaningful, personalized communications," added Saylor. "MicroStrategy's Gateway for Facebook is a major milestone in our company's history as we help companies grow and monetize their customer relationships."
