Michigan Virtual Charter Academy Receives Final Approval from State to Open
New public virtual charter school will serve students across Michigan this year
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Michigan Virtual Charter Academy (MVCA) announced today it received its school identification code from the Michigan Department of Education officially establishing it as an approved public school.
MVCA will serve up to 400 students this year and plans to expand to 1,000 students in kindergarten through high school in subsequent years.
The school is currently accepting enrollment applications and hosting information sessions for interested families. Complete information on MVCA can be found at www.K12.com/mvca.
MVCA was the first public virtual charter school authorized in Michigan. In April, the school was unanimously approved by Grand Valley State University, a well-regarded authorizer of public charter schools in Michigan.
MVCA will use the award-winning curriculum, technology and school services provided by K12 Inc., America's largest provider of online school programs for students in kindergarten through high school.
The K12 virtual school program combines an award-winning curriculum – engaging online lessons and hands-on education materials – with professional teachers, advisors, and state-of-the-art technology that connect students to a vibrant school community. The program is customized for every child. This gives students the opportunity to receive an individualized education regardless of their geographic location, socio-economic background, or educational need.
Younger students in MVCA will work with a "learning coach," usually a parent, to help guide them through their lessons, and they will communicate with their teachers and schoolmates through interactive technology. Teachers will provide instruction, guidance and support, and will interact with students and parents via phone, email, web-based "e-classrooms," and face-to-face meetings. Teachers will also organize a variety of school field trips, activities, and events for students and families.
In partnerships with school districts and charter schools, K12 operates online public schools in 27 states and the District of Columbia: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington state, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
