Michigan Virtual Charter Academy Opens Enrollment May 26 for Students Across the State
Michigan's first public virtual charter school will hold free events and information sessions for interested families
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Michigan Virtual Charter Academy (MVCA) will open enrollment for the 2010-2011 school year on Wednesday, May 26 for students across the state.
MVCA is Michigan's first public virtual charter school. MVCA recently received unanimous approval from Grand Valley State University's Board of Trustees and is expected to begin serving 400 students in kindergarten through high school this Fall. In subsequent years, it will expand to serve up to 1,000 students. The school will also offer an innovative hybrid education model – a blend of virtual learning and classroom-based instruction – to serve the unique individual education needs of students who have dropped out of school.
MVCA will be holding a series of online information sessions and free in-person events in local communities all over the state to provide families an opportunity to meet the school community and learn more about this new public school option.
A complete list of events and information sessions can be found at www.K12.com/mvca.
MVCA intends to use curriculum, technology and school services provided by K12 Inc., the nation's largest provider of high quality online school programs and proprietary curriculum for students in kindergarten through high school. The K12 program combines an award-winning curriculum – using engaging online lessons and hands-on education materials – with professional teachers, advisors, and state-of-the-art technology that connect students to a vibrant school community. The program is customized for every child. This gives students the opportunity to receive an individualized education regardless of their geographic location, socio-economic background, or educational need.
Students will regularly interact with their teachers and schoolmates through interactive technology. Teachers will provide instruction, guidance and support, and will communicate with students and parents via phone, email, web-based "e-classrooms," and face-to-face instruction. Teachers will also organize a variety of school field trips, activities, and events for students and families
MVCA is governed by an independent, non-profit board of directors. The President of the MVCA Board of Directors is Dr. Linda Marlow, a resident of Michigan and retired school teacher with more than 25 years of experience in education.
According to the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), online learning is one of the fastest growing segments in education, and every year more states are providing public virtual charter school opportunities for students. Michigan is the latest state to embrace public virtual charter schools as part of an education reform package recently signed into law by the Governor to improve student achievement by enhancing technology, innovation, and school performance standards.
