MANISTEE, Mich., March 22, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy (MGLVA), a tuition-free, online public charter school, has opened enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year. Authorized by Manistee Area Public Schools, MGLVA prepares Michigan students in grades K-12 for post-secondary success utilizing a state-of-the-art curriculum aligned to the Michigan State Standards and supported by state-certified teachers. The school accepts students in grades K through 12 who reside anywhere in the state.
MGLVA students are required to enroll in six courses and work in the online school curriculum for at least six and a half hours per day to fulfill the requirements of the Michigan Department of Education.
For students in grades K-8, online course offerings include language arts/English, math, science, history, art and music, as well as foreign languages. High school students enjoy a course catalog of more than 150 core, elective, Career Tech Education and Advanced Placements (AP) courses. These courses meet the needs of the Michigan Merit Curriculum. Dual enrollment is also available, which allows students to earn college credit and high school credit for the same course.
Students are supported by state-certified teachers who respond quickly to requests, provide online academic instruction, monitor student progress and attendance, and serve as a resource for curriculum, content, and questions. Parents and students communicate with teachers through e-mail, phone calls, and online class meetings.
"A strong partnership among the parent, student, teacher and school as a whole is what we focus on building here at Michigan Great Lakes Virtual Academy," said Kendall Schroeder, Head of School at MGLVA. "By engaging more in their children's education, parents get to know them on a different level, and it can be very rewarding for families. Plus, when the teacher and parent form a partnership geared toward helping the student grow, the student benefits immensely."
To ensure a seamless transition to online learning, parents and students participate in an extensive onboarding process that involves student and Learning Coach orientations, help sessions and online learning courses facilitated by the MGLVA Family Academic Support Team. This onboarding support is designed to help students and parents build new school relationships, and to set students up for success while building strong independent learning skills.
Families also have access to online student clubs, monthly regional outings, and a strong start website that features extensive Learning Coach resources. For students in the Manistee area, face-to-face extracurricular activities are available for participation.
Enrollment is now open for fall 2017. For more information on MGLVA, visit http://mglva.k12.com/.
